Member Agency Spotlight: Calvary Agape Community Outreach Service

By Sean Breslin | Manager of Recruitment, Community Food Programs

Calvary Agape Outreach Service serves West Philadelphia with food, clothing, and community events that continue to grow with new partnerships. Agency representative Theresa Woodall relies on a team of four dedicated volunteers to help her serve families in Haddington, and together they aim to strengthen their neighborhood.

“Our mandate is to service every need of the community,” Woodall said.

That mandate has grown to include a Children’s Christmas Brunch, hot lunches on Mondays, and partnerships with Grocers Against Hunger stores. With every additional resource, Calvary Agape attracts more and more people to their doors.

[T]he young lady came in, and she was so grateful for what we had done for her and her kids.

But it’s not the number of people Calvary Agape serves – it’s how they’re served. When one of the recent storms blew through the region, a woman came to Calvary Agape looking for food for herself and her children.

“She didn’t have money or food stamps, and we weren’t open that day for service,” Woodall said.  “She was so upset and crying, because she did not have food to feed her kids.”

Though they were closed, Woodall knew she had to help. She hurried to pack enough food for the family to ride out the storm, and told the family when they could come back for more.

“On Monday, the young lady came in, and she was so grateful for what we had done for her and her kids.”

Theresa Woodall’s service to Calvary Agape and the community brings out the best of people in the Delaware Valley, and agencies like hers help Philabundance feed thousands of people every day.
