Driving Away Hunger During the Month of Ramadan

Ramadan is the holiest time of year for followers of the Islamic faith. Over the course of 30 days, Muslims around the world observe the occasion through fasting, blessings, and community. One of the highlights of this sacred period is the iftar, a communal meal to break the fast each evening at sunset. The iftar is meant to be a time of joy, togetherness, and sharing. However, for those facing food insecurity, accessing nutritious and appropriate meals can be a struggle. And that is the unfortunate reality for some families right here in Philadelphia.

That’s why Philabundance was proud to once again partner with Senator Sharif Street for his Driving Hunger Away During Ramadan initiative to ensure that no family goes without. For the past five years, this 30-day food distribution program has provided free, culturally responsive meals in community spaces throughout the city, serving hundreds of residents daily. Meal options include both meat and vegetarian entrées to accommodate dietary preferences.

This year, Philabundance Community Kitchen prepared and distributed 7,600 wholesome, handmade meals through 30 selected community partners in North Philadelphia. On Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 29, we distributed an impressive 1,000 meals, thanks to our partnerships with Masjidullah Center for Human Excellence and Philadelphia Masjid.

Driving Hunger Away During Ramadan is a powerful community response to food insecurity in the region. The initiative reflects the true spirit of Ramadan, a time when Muslims are encouraged to give back, especially to those who are less fortunate. As we work to drive hunger from our communities and end it for good, initiatives like this have never been more important.

Food insecurity remains a very real, pressing issue in Philadelphia, impacting a significant number of our friends and neighbors. Studies have shown that food insecurity rates among Philadelphia families are higher than national averages, with 22.4% of households experiencing food insecurity compared to 16.5% nationally. Nearly half a million Philadelphia residents have seen their food assistance reduced following the expiration of pandemic-era SNAP benefits in 2023. Recent cuts at the federal level have made families in the region even more vulnerable to food insecurity, leaving them at a loss for essential resources – during everyday life and especially in meaningful seasons like Ramadan.

Driving Hunger Away During Ramadan not only removes the worry for families celebrating Ramadan amid food insecurity, but the initiative also provides culturally appropriate food to those in need. As part of our Good Food Policy, Philabundance is committed to offering the communities we serve the foods they want and deserve. The meals distributed through Driving Hunger Away During Ramadan help to sustain the holiday’s traditions, delivering the special flavors of the holy month and ensuring families can celebrate in peace, dignity, and with the support of their community.

Our work would not be possible without a large network of supporters and partners who help us in fulfilling our mission. We are deeply grateful to Senator Street and our community partners for coming together to make this season special for individuals and families across the city. Eid Mubarak, and may this special time bring joy, peace, and happiness to all who celebrate.
