Drive Away Hunger During Ramadan

The February 2023 expiration of Pennsylvania’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will have devastating effects on roughly 485,000 people in the Philadelphia region. Along with the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and the rising cost of food caused by inflation, food insecurity has continued to intensify at a startling rate. On a national level, households are losing an average of $80 in SNAP benefits per month, some are losing even more.

To ease the burden felt by families and individuals throughout the city, Senator Sharif Street has partnered with Philabundance for the 3rd annual “Driving Hunger Away During Ramadan” initiative. During the 30-day food distribution program, which runs March 22nd through April 20th, Philabundance will provide nutritious and culturally appropriate food to 6,000 community members facing food insecurity. Each day during Ramadan, 200 halal meat and vegetarian meals, prepared by our talented Philabundance Community Kitchen culinary arts team, will be distributed.

Community members can pick up their meals at a different site each day, including housing developments, recreation centers, community and cultural centers, medical facilities, and more. For a full list of dates and locations, and to preregister, visit Senator Street’s website or call (215) 227-6161.

Sponsors who have given or pledged support of this year’s initiative include UPMC, Philadelphia Technical Training Institute, ANON, Aeta, AmeriHealth Caritas, and PA Health & Wellness.
