Every year, 6abc partners with Philabundance to highlight stories of food insecurity and those working to combat the issue through its Holiday Hunger Series. In years past, the series has covered a mom that started a gluten-free pantry, the ‘Senior Box’ program and Vetri’s Mobile Teaching Kitchen.
This year, 6abc tackled issues of food waste and college hunger, and also shed a light on some of Philabundance’s latest business ventures. Check out these amazing pieces that showcase the innovative ways Philabundance and its partners are trying to #beethunger.
1. Food Connect App is ready to stop hunger
Food Connect’s partnership with Philabundance allows the hunger relief organization to get back to its roots of small retail rescue.
Food Connect is an app that allows anyone to combat food waste and help those in need. Restaurants, caterers and the general public can download the app and schedule a pick up of extra food that goes to area shelters and emergency kitchens.
2. Rowan University fights hunger on campus
Rowan University recently conducted a study which found that 52% of its students identified as food insecure so it sprang into action to combat that harsh statistic. The university began partnering with Philabundance to open a free produce distribution on campus, providing fresh fruits and veggies to students and community members.
